The number of arrests has been rising rapidly, with the LAPD chief saying nearly 200 people had been taken into custody since Tuesday night, before the curfew began, and at least 378 people had been arrested over the past four days. There were also reports of looting at 23 stores during the four days of protests.
Footage of the violence, including a photojournalist who was shot in the head with a rubber bullet while on duty on Sunday, showed violent confrontations between protesters and officers. Although the curfew covers a limited area, many L.A. residents have expressed concern about the military presence, saying "the presence of soldiers in America's civilian neighborhoods does not make anyone safe."
